5 Badass Female Characters to Dress Up as for Halloween
According to a Boxed In report, 79% of broadcast, cable, and streaming programs have more male than female characters. I can’t find a recent (within the last 5 years) of the percentage of female leads in movies, but you don’t need a report to see it isn’t even half. Guys, don’t get me wrong, I love you. Male actors, I love to look at you. But women can play the lead too.
While there may not be a ton, there are some bad ass female characters. These are the characters that in one way or another, we want our little girls (or niece, in my case) to look up to. My choices are from both film and tv, both new and old. Although mostly new, because BA female characters are, unfortunately, kind of a new thing.
Black Widow is immediately who I thought of when I started brainstorming for this list. She doesn’t need a man to save her. She can kick anyone’s butt. She gets to be a part of the Avengers without having any other skills than fighting. COME ON. And while totally not important, she is a redhead (like me) and can rock a skin tight suit.
Yes, I’m on the Stranger Things bandwagon. It is such a good show if you haven’t seen it. Eleven is (mostly) what little girls should strive to be. She (mostly) works for the greater good, is a good friend, and can kick evil creatures butts. I know the whole torture thing is not something little girls should want, but her awesomeness is.
Yes, another Netflix original character. Netflix seems to be good about featuring females as their leads. Jessica Jones is a lot like Eleven. She is damaged, with men being the cause. But they are both strong despite their weaknesses. While you definitely don’t want your little girl to go around using the language Jessica does, you do want them to take in the value of sticking up for your friends and doing what is right. And (my favorite part of Jessica Jones), that it IS OK to fall apart sometimes. You don’t ALWAYS have to be strong.
I have a confession. I don’t actually know that much about Agent Carter. What I know comes from Captain America. I never watched the show. But I do know that she was the founder of Shield. Yes, a WOMAN founded the most powerful (and unfortunately, eventually corrupt) spy network ever. Yes, yes, I know it is just in the comics. But still! She created it! In the 40s! When women were supposed to be home tending to the kids and making dinner.
It should come to no surprise that as a Disney fan, I like Once Upon a Time. If you haven’t heard of it or watched it (shame on you), it is basically all the Disney stories come to life. What would these characters be like if they were in our world? With jobs and kids and mortgages? And of course still fighting evil. Emma Swan is the “Savior.” She is the main character in a crazy amount of awesome characters. Like many of the women on here, she has a damaged past. But she can kick butt and fight through anything. Heck, she went to hell to save her boyfriend from being dead! (The very yummy Captain Hook.) Like Jessica Jones, she also shows her vulnerable side, something little girls need to know is totally a-ok.
