‘Blossom’ into these cookies for National Peanut Butter Day
OK, technically I’m a day late. But I hate posting on weekends and yet not having a full work week of posts 🙂
It’s National Peanut Butter Day. I decided to share my awesome peanut blossom recipe. This recipe has been around probably for decades in my family. It is from a little clipping, probably from a magazine. I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of these cookies. I mean, I like them. But I don’t eat 100 of them like I do with normal peanut butter cookies. But they are my brothers favorite, though, which is why we always make them around the holidays.
Before we get to the recipe, here is some awesome peanut butter facts I found over at MNN.

- Peanuts aren’t nuts. They’re legumes. So it’s technically inaccurate to call it a nut butter, but it’s usually referred to one anyway.

- One bag chocolate (or whatever) kisses
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 3/4 cup REESE’S Creamy Peanut Butter
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup additional granulated sugar for rolling(optional)
Heat oven to 375F. Remove wrappers from kisses.
Beat shortening and peanut butter. Add sugars, beat until fluffy. Add egg, milk, and vanilla. Mix well, and then add dry ingredients.
Roll into small balls, and then roll the balls in sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8-10 minutes. As soon as you take the cookies out, immediately press a kiss into the top. Cookie edges will crack, but that is ok. Leave the cookies on the pan for about two minutes, and then move to wire racks. Makes about 48 cookies, depending on how big your balls are. (haha)
