Geocaching: An Adventure for Everyone!

I’ve gone geocaching a couple of times when I was with my ex. I need to get back into it. You may be wondering, what heck is she talking about, geocaching? Find out in this awesome guest post by Morgan Messick of M Messick Blog!

Geocaching: An Adventure for Everyone!

I was born to be an adventurer. When I was a kid, I would go on these crazy, make-believe adventures at my house – I would pretend to be a crime-solving detective, a strong and courageous explorer, and a pirate searching for buried treasure. Those were the best days of my life and I thought that I had left them in the past, but I was wrong. I am still an adventurer, and just because I’m all grown up doesn’t mean that I have to stop exploring.

This change of mind for me started when I discovered geocaching. For those of you who are totally unfamiliar with this, it is similar to the “Pokemon Go” phenomenon, but instead of catching Pokemon on your phone, wasting money on in-app purchases, and being led to some very strange places, you are trading real-life objects and stories with other hikers and adventurers from all over the world.

geocaching: an adventure for everyone!

Geocaching has been described as “…an any day, any time adventure that can take you to amazing and beautiful places in the place you live or the places you want to visit” by geocaching.com. A geocache is a container that varies in size typically filled with a number of items or a logbook for finders to sign. Geocachers are also encouraged to log their find online and describe their experience! Once a cache has been placed, its coordinates are posted in the geocache app  (available for both IPhone and Android) for adventurers of all ages to start tracking!

Signing up to be a geocacher is totally free – for the really hardcore geocachers, there is a premium account available for only $30 a year that unlocks different types of caches (most at expert level) that are unavailable to the free users. However, a premium account is absolutely not necessary for a great geocaching experience – I have been using the free app for several months and still haven’t made it to half of the caches near my house!

The really cool thing about geocaching is that you get outside and go to really neat places – some people leave really cool things behind and there is a story behind every cache. With geocaching, you will discover places in your hometown that you never knew existed, and you can find them almost everywhere that you go (even rest stops!). Geocaching is an activity for people of all ages, and a great (free) way for the entire family to do something together!

What are you waiting for? The adventure awaits right outside your front door!

I **love** the app! So much more convenient than printing out the info & programming the coordinates into a Rhino or whatever.
