My Favorite 2016 Holiday Toys
At 23, I probably shouldn’t still get excited about toys. Toys are for kids, right?
WRONG. Ok, kind of right. But seriously, have you seen the cool toys out now a days? While I wouldn’t buy any toys for myself, I would buy them for my niece so I could play with them.
This year brings a whole bunch of awesome new toys. So many toys now are incredibly interactive. Yes, I may have had a robot puppy that barked when I pressed a button. But I did not have an animal that hatched.
I decided to make this list for a couple of reasons. The first is that while I don’t have kids of my own, toys are cool (see above.) The second? These are HOT toys. Your kids (or nieces or nephews) probably already have their list for Santa created, if only in their heads. And it probably contains A LEAST one of these toys. You need to know what to be looking for with all the holiday sales! And finally, talking about toys is just fun.
Most of these toys are geared for girls, simply because I really don’t know what is ‘cool’ in boy toys. Check out this list from Mommy PR for a better selection of boy toys, many of them STEM-related!
Something I feel like I must mention: these toys are not cheap. They are super cool which means a super not cool price. You will definitely want to make sure you shop a sale if you plan on buying. Stick with me though and I will keep you updated on the best deals (or at least try!)
I have created two sections: Imaginative Toys and STEM Toys.
This is one of those toys that are giant (this castle is over 4ft long) but your relatives buy for your kid anyways. The two characters that come with the castle can talk and sing with each other, while the castle itself also makes fun noises. There is even a clock that teaches your child words, colors, letters and more.
If you have a little girl, you’ve probably heard about the new Disney Channel princess, Elena. This doll sings for about a minute, which means you will be willing her batteries to die by time New Years hits. Still, if your little girl loves the show, she NEEDS this doll.
To be honest, I kind of hope Ella doesn’t get this, because its face kind of freaks me out. Reminds me of the 90s show, Dinosaurs. BUT, it does do a lot and that is why it makes the list. It responds to touch and has over 50 sounds and motions. If you fill his water bowl, he breathes colored mist and burps.
This little dog is basically the same idea as the dragon. It even also has a dumb face. I don’t know what it is about robotic pet faces that I just don’t like. I don’t think she does as much as the dragon, but she does like to cuddle. And sleep. So, she is a lot like me 🙂 It also ‘breathes’ which is pretty cool.
Is it expensive? Yes. Does your child NEED it? No way. Is it super cool? HECK YES. It is designed for all terrain and has adjustable speeds.
I have a feeling that Trolls is going to be an adorable movie. Even if it isn’t, kids are still going to love it. This Poppy doll plays music and says 25 different things. When you brush her hair, it lights up. You can also interact with her by wearing the included flower bracelet.
This is one of those toys that you play with after your kid goes to bed. Show your kid the joys of the awesome old school video games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Mega Man, and more (all pre-loaded).
Num Nums are the smellable cousin of Shopkins. They are shaped like inanimate items and yet have adorable faces. This ice cream truck is more than just a cool little toy though. You get all the stuff you need to make your own lipgloss, which you then dispense out of the ice cream truck. I would have LOVED this toy as a kid because I could craft AND play with it.
Hatchimals are one of the hottest toys this holiday season. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get put on a great sale at every store for Black Friday. I also wouldn’t be surprised if this is one of those toys people beat each other up for. The toy comes in an egg which ACTUALLY HATCHES. Then the baby inside does all the normal things a robot animal would.
All I’m going to say about this: yes, your little girl totally needs this. Yes, I know she will only be able to play with it MAX two years because she won’t be able to fit anymore. BUT LOOK HOW COOL IT IS.
The pie in the face game was on of THE games to have last year. I saw them on Ebay for over $100! That is crazy! Personally, I totally don’t get it. Why would I want my face all yucky? While it’s not my cup of tea, I’m sure it will still be a must-have for many this season!
Batman vs Superman Ultimate Batcave Playset
If I was a boy, I would totally want this. Heck, who am I kidding, I do want it! It is the Batman version of a Barbie Dream House. Batman can launch missiles and zipline from the roof to lower levels, disappear in the gun tower escape channel, or catch an intruder and send him through the trap door into jail. There’s also a secret chamber, a Batcomputer, a training dummy, transforming ladders, and more!
This is probably one of the few Shopkin toys I didn’t buy my niece. But look how cool it is! I’m working on convincing my mom to buy it for her. You can play with it plus use it as a storage case. Probably one of the few Shopkin toys that are actually useful!
This is THE Barbie house of Barbie houses. It is wifi enabled, connects with an app, and can recognize voice commands like Siri does. You can have the elevator move up and down, turn the oven on, start the party lights, and even turns on normal lights when Barbie is on the floor. Come on, everyone should want a house like this.
Your kid can learn how to code while playing with this ‘code-a-piller.’ Kids connect the different segments to make the code-a-piller go forward, left, right, or wherever they chose. As each action happens, the segment lights up. Great toy to introduce your child to STEM!
If your kid is already into video games, why not allow him to make his own? They can code rooms, characters, art, and more.
Your child can create their own working ferris wheel and carousel that actually works! The kit comes with motors that the child has to use to make the working set. Even cooler, you can take it apart and build something else when you get bored! It reminds me of Lego mashed up with STEM.
If your child is a Barbie fan, she needs this super cool STEM play kit! You use the storybook to go create 7 different models for Barbie’s Animal Shelter Gala. Then create the dresses for the fashion show while learning about biology and chemistry. PLUS, all the items you create can work with the new Barbie Dreamhouse (see above)!
